What is Saju? A Guidebook to Korean Four Pillars

A practical intro to Saju: Four Pillars, Heavenly Stems, Earthly Foundation, Five Elements, Day Master strength, Ten Gods, and compatibility—organized as a single guidebook.

What is Saju?

Saju (四柱), literally "Four Pillars," is a traditional Korean system that reads your temperament and life patterns from eight characters (the Four Pillars chart) derived by converting your birth year, month, day, and hour through the East Asian calendar.

Unlike Western astrology, which looks at planets and constellations, Saju is grounded in the interplay of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and the cycles of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches.

A Brief History

It grew out of Chinese calendrical and fate-reading traditions of the Tang and Song dynasties, then traveled to Korea where it developed its own interpretive style. For centuries it has shaped everyday decisions—marriage compatibility, naming children, moving, and starting businesses.

How to Approach It

  • Not a fixed fate. Saju describes innate tendencies and flow—it does not lock in an ending.
  • A tool for self-understanding. It's most useful as a lens for reflecting on yourself and your relationships.
  • Choice comes first. In the end, your choices shape your life.
