What is Astrology?
Everything in the solar system is constantly moving. Astrology describes our life experiences in the context of these movements—using the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at the moment of birth to explore personality, tendencies, and life themes.
A Brief History
Western astrology has roots in Mesopotamian (Babylonian) sky observation and calendar-making thousands of years ago. It spread through the Hellenistic world into Greek and Roman tradition, was studied in medieval and Renaissance Europe, and became widely popular in the 20th century with psychological astrology. Today, birth-chart (natal chart) based interpretation is the standard.
Birth Chart
A birth chart (natal chart) is a snapshot of the sky for the exact time and place someone was born. It shows which signs and degrees the Sun, Moon, and planets were in, and how the sky was divided at that moment (e.g. the eastern horizon and the house system). Unlike Saju’s four pillars, astrology usually draws this as a circular wheel with planets and houses.
Zodiac Sun Sign
The part of astrology you probably know best is the Sun sign. “What’s your sign?” means the zodiac sign the Sun was in when you were born. It’s determined by birth month—Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and so on through the 12 signs—and is linked to core identity, will, and self-expression. Each sign spans roughly one month.
Ascendant (Rising Sign)
The Ascendant is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth time and place. It changes with the clock, so an accurate birth time is required. The Ascendant describes how you appear to others, first impressions, and how you meet the world; it also marks the start of the 1st house. If the Sun sign is “who you are inside,” the Ascendant is “how you show up.”
Houses
Houses represent the place or context where life themes unfold. The 12 houses cover 12 areas of life—self, resources, communication, home, romance, work, partnership, transformation, learning and travel, career and reputation, friends and hopes, and the unconscious. Which house a planet is in shows where that planet’s energy tends to play out.
House System
There are several methods for dividing the chart into houses. Placidus, Koch, Whole Sign, and Porphyry are commonly used; we often use Placidus or Porphyry. Each system draws house boundaries differently, so sticking to one system keeps readings consistent.
Aspects
Aspects are specific angles between two planets (or key points)—e.g. 0° (conjunction), 60° (sextile), 90° (square), 120° (trine), 180° (opposition). Each angle has a quality (e.g. flowing or tense) and is read as a dialogue between the planets. More aspects usually mean a richer, more detailed chart story.
Planetary Transits and Orbs
A transit occurs when a planet’s current position in the sky makes an angle to a point in your birth chart (e.g. “Saturn is square your Sun now”). Transits are used to read timing, challenges, and opportunities. The orb is the allowed margin around an exact angle—it defines how close an aspect or transit must be to count as “active.”

Based on Earth’s curvature, latitude, and RAMC (Right Ascension of the Midheaven), we iterate up to 100 times to compute your unique 12 house cusps.
Perfect Time-Space & Retrograde Detection
We fully correct for your birth country’s complex DST history and timezone to derive true UTC. We also precisely detect retrograde (℞) motion—when a planet appears to move backward due to Earth’s orbital speed—according to each planet’s orbital period.
